Puzzling as well an interesting image. The man could be looking into a mirror on a table, only it seems too far to one side for him to see his reflection. The object in his hand doesn't look quite like a straight razor. There seems to be no shaving lather on his face. The wall appears in front of him, and the background not quite like a reflection.
