Governor Mario Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge Winter Sunset

The soaring towers and the graphic play of the stay-cables are an inviting motif, whether seen in the golden
light of late afternoon, as I first did in October while looking up the Hudson from the Metro North Railroad station
platform at Ardsley-on-Hudson ... or illuminated as sunset transitions to twilight, as seen here at Tarrytown, where
I journeyed to photograph this aspect of the bridge during a dramatic winter sunset.

The Governor Mario Cuomo Tappan Zee Bridge connects Tarrytown with Nyack on the western side of
the river, carrying eight lanes of traffic on the twin spans and a pedestrian and bicycle way, on the north span.

The Tappan Zee is a three mile wide portion of the Hudson. The early Dutch explorers named it for the native
Tappan population of the area and, due to its breadth, chose to call it the Tappan Zee, 'Zee' being the Dutch
word for sea. The Cuomo Tappan Zee bridge was completed in 2017 and fully opened to traffic in 2018,
replacing an older bridge over this stretch of the Hudson.

The photograph, taken in late December, makes its first appearance tonight.
