Colorado River 1...before...Grand Canyon

Below the Glen Canyon Dam, the Colorado River runs sediment free for all practical purposes until it is joined by some of its tributaries downstream from the dam. Depositing its rich load of red silts and sands in Lake Powell, behind the Glen Canyon Dam, leaves the exiting Colorado River clear, cold, and green, as you see it here. It is the color you see in the now iconic pictures of the Colorado River at Horseshoe Bend, which lies just a few miles below the Glen Canyon Dam.

This is an aerial shot of the Colorado River just shortly before it is joined by the Little Colorado. The picture is offered for content, not for technical merit.

Location: Grand Canyon, east of the merger between the Little Colorado and the Colorado Rivers.
