Colorado River2...merger...Grand Canyon

The Little Colorado River, a deep red color, flows into the Colorado River, an emerald blue-green color, just upstream from Desert View's overlook of the canyon.

The color of the Little Colorado is probably close to the color of the undammed Colorado, before the building of the Glen Canyon dam. The Little Colorado flows relatively unimpeded through the same rock formations as the Colorado, and thus carries a heavy burden of red sand and silt. The color difference between the two rivers is quite dramatic.

Aerial photo, offered for content, not for technical quality.

Location: Grand Canyon NP, slightly upstream from Desert View.

Millions of years of sediment buildup all being cut away by one little river. I like the photo. -archie
