Hay Castle was built in the late 12th century by the powerful Norman Lord, William de Braose, and Matilda de Braose. By all accounts she was a "formidable woman".
It is said that she made a deal with the Devil and the castle was built in a single night as a result. Although she died at Corfe Castle in Dorset, it is here that her ghost is said to roam.
