1Scape No. 8 - While Waiting for the Downtown 1 Train

The 110th Street/Cathedral Parkway Station in Manhattan's Morningside Heights is one of the original IRT
(Interborough Rapid Transit) stops along the Upper West Side portion of the initial route. It opened in 1904,
one of the original twenty-eight stations on New York's first Subway system.

The station, which serves the Broadway-Seventh Avenue Local 1 Train, received renovations including new lighting
in the early years of this century, but the original mosaics and other design work, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, were faithfully maintained. Across the tracks may be seen the mosaic "Cathedral Parkway"
sign, typical of the early design scheme of the IRT. I'm not certain as to whether the newsstand on the downtown
platform was part of the original design, but I do love the stained glass "Candy" sign that adorns it.

"1Scapes" is an ongoing series of photographs taken along the route of the 1 Train
from South Ferry at the lower tip of Manhattan to Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. (*)
