truth and ethics in documentary photography

A good test of what Wen has just said is to take a newspaper picture, and make a piece of card with a rectangle in it. Try the card slot over different headlines with the picture........it's surprising what comes out.
Equally it applies to what is printed near or around the picture, even pages before. The juxtaposition of one picture or article with another puts a slant on the picture. Nothing exists in isolation............and the photographer is rarely the last person who decides how or where it goes. The biggest indicator of what's what is which paper it's printed in in the first place - but even that isn't a cert. There are loads of books on advertising that illustrate this, they use it all the time.
