vanishing homes

in the center of baku, quite close to the bling-bling-center of the capital of azerbaijan. these houses were populated by workers and craftsmen. but now they are forced to leave, with money and pressure. new huge blocks replace the former homes, blocks without soul and with expensive flats, too expensive for the workers and craftsmen. they are forced to resettle in the desert around the capital, in dust and wind, no trees, dusty streets.

Da sind sie wieder, die feinen Nuancen des Grau/Sepia. Sie zeigen schonungslos jedes Detail auf und lassen uns so den Verfall noch stärker erleben.
    Großartig!

"Telling" and documentary picture,Philip.reminds me similar scenes in many parts of Thessaloniki and other Greek cities,in late 50"s-60's, when poor proprietors of old and nearly ruined houses were looking for contractors to build multi-storey buildings in their places and get some part of the big resulting profit. Unfortunately the procedure was enhanced by lax gonvernmental policy, illegal intermingle and corruption so many beautiful, classic and historic mansion houses built by famous architects that stood for nearly two hundred years as the best part of the city were also demolished becoming victims of greediness and easy profit.. Some of them still can be seen as morbid remnants because descendants can hardly afford any substantial repair now and the state-very late of course- declared them as indexes of civilization and history and banned their demolition. On the other hand refusing of course to contribute to any repair cost!
This, so called "cntractor's exchange" of the 60's is a separate and rather morbid chapter in modern Greek history that changed(destroyed) the character of many greek cities and above all of Thessaloniki that was a lot prettier than Athens in the beginning of tentieth century and this is quite reasonable considering that during the many years of Ottoman occupation Thessaloniki was a thriving cosmopolitan city second only to Constantinople.
    best regards
