The Fungi World (224) : Crab Brittlegill

Very special this one, not because of his looks, but because of its smell !
Crab Brittlegill is a fungus with a characteristic and quite distinct odour of crab or shellfish.

This species grows mostly in coniferous woodlands and seems to have a preference for Douglas fir.

Its cap appears in various mixed coloured shades, most commonly purple to wine-red to brownish-orange.

Stands unfortunately on the Red List of vulnerable and threatened species !

Dutch name : Roodvoetrussula
German name : Rote Herings-Täubling (auch Rotfuss-Täubling genannt)
Latin name : Russula xerampelina
