Die Hagia Sophia ist eigentlich eine byzantinische Kirche, die von 532 bis 537 n. Chr. im Auftrag Kaisers Justinian erbaut wurde. Sie gilt in ihrer architektonischen Einzigartigkeit oft als eine Kirche ohne Vorbilder und ohne Nachahmung.Die Hagia Sophia war die Kathedrale Konstantinopels, Hauptkirche des Byzantinischen Reiches sowie Mittelpunkt der Orthodoxie und ist heute ein Wahrzeichen Istanbuls. Atatürk machte sie zum Museum. Erdogan zur Moschee.
