Von 1963 bis 1990 saß Neslon Mandela wegen andauernden Widerstands gegen die Apartheitspolitik in seinem Land in Haft.
1993 erhielt er für sein Eintreten gegen die Unterdrückung seines Volkes und die Abschaffung der Apartheit in Südafrika den Friedensnobelpreis.
1994 bis 1999 war er der erste schwarze Präsident seines Landes
