Looking back in sadness
The Grand Canal, Venice, from the back of a vaporetto passing under the Rialto Bridge. During our stay we had a guided walk where the nature of the tides was explained and the heights of floods in the past marked on walls. It is easy to see in this view how an increase in level of 6 foot is so devastating.
The unreal thing about is how we only just got there just before the flood and then lockdown.
While the damage to the fabric of the city was horrific in scale it is the effect on the lives of all the people who live and work there and depend on its historic beauty and visitors
