Ironbridge

Ironbridge , over the Severn, is, I think, the first and oldest bridge in the world - made out of iron.
It is about 200 years old,
and a world heritage site.

I believe this was the first iron bridge in history. A pleasure to see it intact and in excellent condition. Congratulations on the beautiful shot.

Yes - it is a nice place.
Interesting to think that when it was built - in 1781 - it would have been regarded as being incredibly modern and futuristic.
Certainly - in the 1780's and 1790's - hundreds of educated visitors would come to this part of the Severn valley - to see the bridge, and also the ironworks and furnaces in the vicinity.
If you have time - google the painting "Coalbrookdale by Night"  by Philip James de Loutherbourg.

I think that they used cast iron - to create segments that would, normally, be constructed out of lengths of timber.
So - it looks to me like a traditional wooden construction (like the roof of a house) - but made out of iron.
This bridge is one of the iconic monuments of the "industrial revolution" in Britain.
