These books tht everyone has mentioned....do they tell you how to airbrush to a really detailed and high standard?
Your best bet is like somebody said try buying a good book on ebay, you can get them for next to nothing and then experiment and find your own style.Don't try to copy any body else. You can download a lot of filters for Photoshop for free which will achive a lot of effects for you,the secrete is to have fun with what you are doing and not to expext a perfect finish every time has it doe's not happen like that.Just keep trying different filters and effects till you find something that suits you, good luck and if you have any Questions just post them.
Chris Young mentioned Scott Kelby's books among them "the photoshop cs2 book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby. The author Kelby is the president of the Photoshop association in the U.S. - like a guru in those circles, but an expert/guru who is talking in a straight, uncomplicated and fun way so everyone can understand what he says. I have Scott Kelbys's books on Photoshop Elements 5 and Photoshop CS 3, plus his first book on digital photography. He also offers his own website (Kelby training)where you can find all types of training videos by famous photographer instructors and photoshop instructors. I would highly recommend what Kelby can offer.
Let me add to my previous post that you could check out Kelby training at:

"If you're ready to get down and learn exactly "how to do it," then this DVD is for you. Scott shows you step-by-step the exact techniques used by today's cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why. This Photoshop® CS3 DVD tutorial exposes even more of the top professionals' most closely guarded secrets,: is Kelby's own Photoshop DVD at the Kelby training site.
At the site is also Dave Cross’s DVD Photoshop CS3 for beginners.
Best wishes,
