Wrangell on Wrangell Island with about 2200 inhabitants and a history of Tlingit Native people and Russians and a fire in the 50s that destroyed much .... here too I was in 2006 with our sailboat ...

  you can drive your boat or take an ocean liner to skagway - which is one hundred miles (162 km!) south of this big city and hop on a bus. thousands of people have been doing it for years ...
  there used to be train service but since the road got put in it doesn't come all the way anymore ;-((
  in today's world, though, flying is the easy way.
  we have an airport in whitehorse ... ;-))

  thank you, Robert .... I was actually talking about getting the 400 miles from Wrangell to Whitehorse being tedious but yes, you could fly. I was in Skagway on my trip - there is a train but only to the former Yukon goldrush area. I have been to Whitehorse with my family via the Alaska highway in the 70s when it was still unpaved ... camping in a VW van :-))) yes, would love to revisit, must have changed a lot - wonder if that Chinese restaurant where we ate is still there .....

  there are likely more chinese/oriental restaurants per capital in this city than anywhere else -
  and, yes, it's definitely a different-looking place with so! many new people in town ...
