USS Nautilus from across the river

This shot was difficult to get. Still not sure wether I was trespassing to get that unobstructed view, and I had no zoom to fully frame the boat, so I slanted the frame. Not sure what to do about the extra background resulting from rotating it back.

Freehand on that distance with no foreground = no Problem
    Programs MS-Image-Composing-Editor or autostich.
    Both are free.

Canon Photostitch DID exist even back then! Didn't work half bad, and I even HAD it! Came either in the 10D's software package or even with G3 I bought earlier for my Dad. I think it just never occurred to me in this situation, maybe also because I had failed to bring a tripod.

At other scenes, in New Mexico and elsewhere, I did specifically take multiple shots with the intent of trying a stitch later at home. Also freehand. The things we do...

Feel sorry for you. Nowadays it's no problem to take multiple pictures from that distance with big overlap and merge them as a panorama.
You may print that inner picture in a book but never ever with a frame

Verstehe Dein Problem.
