The Living Forest (335) : Wild Chicory
Wild Chicory is a plant with bright blue flowers, native to Europe and widely naturalized in North America and Australia.
Chicory is also cultivated by farmers for the food industry.
It is grown for its leaves (appreciated in certain cuisines of Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey) but also for the bitter roots, which are used as a coffee substitute (similar to dandelion coffee).

German name : Gemeine Wegwarte
Latin name : Cichorium intybus

what an amazing plant this is! guess what, there's a tall specimen growing in our front yard, snug against the fir trees. we admired it all summer. one morning it was all in bloom, the next it looked all dead again. so strange, how the blossoms randomly appear to open and close, while gradually blooming their way up all the way to the top of the plant! never knew that it was wild chicory, though! as they say, you live and learn… ; ) great, how you "directed" the light in this shot! the delicate details of the sky-blue blossoms – beautiful!! greetings, sabine.archiek 09/09/2015 3:43
