The Living Forest (259) : Marbled White (female)
The Marbled White is a butterfly with beautiful markings
(females are always marked in brown while the males have more black markings).
Despite its English name, the Marbled White however is more closely related to the subfamily known as the "browns" than the "whites".
This species likes to live in forest clearings and woodland edges, meadows and steppes (Europe, south Russia, Asia Minor and Iran).

German name : Schachbrett ( auch Damenbrett genannt)
Latin name : Melanargia galathea
