Steinbach bei Jöhstadt

A visit to eastern Germany's Erzgebirge region to photograph the narrow gauge steam trains of the Preßnitztalbahn also allowed time to capture the wider landscape through which these trains travel.

This winter day in 2008 provided a variable feast of weather conditions, including swirling big wet snowflakes (much hoped for in terms of my desire to shoot "steam in the snow") as well as calmer conditions, all in the space of a couple of hours.

While waiting for one of the steam locomotives to be readied for its trip from Steinbach to Jöhstadt, there was time to wander a bit with the cameras.

This scene was captured on Ektachrome-100 slide film.

love the nostalgic atmosphere of "home coming" that's in this shot: it's a little as though, i've been following the meandering river for ages, its icy flow, and now i'm finally reaching the beautiful coziness of a small town like steinbach, where the steam engine puffs friendly away, emitting warm clouds and about to take my tired self and feet wherever they want to go – which is home! greetings, sabine.
