Canaletto's "The Reception of the French Ambassador in Venice" - ca. 1740
at the amazing Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, Russia

One of my favourite paintings - now greeting me every day when I open my computer I never get tired of looking at all the small details and admiring this painter's perspective and being reminded of how much I love Venice .....

colors,
the scenery of Venice, everything just that as frescoes on the ceiling, I imagine wonderful.
For me, a top image and favorites.

Venice = an open air museum, nowadays.
I hope you love modern Vancouver more than
old-fashioned Venice.
Though, a real beautiful view of this densely
populated place.

yes, so much to see! and those beautiful somewhat gentle colors!! amazing, how he succeeded in giving the palace its "perspectival look", reaching far back into the depth of the painting… dimension-wise, it must be a huge work of art! love the "casual scenes" in the foreground, near the water, surrounding the official reception, like e.g. he different kinds of dogs – on the gondola barking at a another on land, and in a playful mood, on the stairs by the water… hugs, sabine.
