delta of river Evros

In the Northeast border of Greece to Turkey and along the river Evros is extended an expanse of 200 sq. kilometers forming a Delta which offers a rich diversity of habitats including marshes, lakes, lagoons, sandy islets, swamps and reedbeds.More than 300 bird varieties can be found in this bird watcher's paradise-actually a trained eye can spot about 100 on an average day. During the winter the whole area is almost flooded and thousands of birds seek shelyer in this delta, among the vastest in Europe... The area was declared a Ramsar protected wetland in 1974.
