** Herbstschmetterling **
Im Licht des Kirchleins seh ich schweben
Bunt eines Schmetterlings Flug;
Er strebt hinaus: zum warmen Leben,
Hinaus zum Walde geht sein Zug.
Er strebt hinaus: nur wenige Tage,
Und scharfer Wind nimmt Blatt um Blatt.
Oh armer Schmetterling im Hage,
Du sinkst zur Erde todesmatt!
Hier raste doch an heil`ger Schwelle,
Buntschmetterling, oh Seele du!
Die Welt ist Herbst, der Tod ist schnelle,
Und sicher nur des Kirchleins Ruh!
