Everlasting symbols

Greece
Epirus
region of Konitsa

The more than a thousand year period of the Byzantine empire with its culture, orthodox religion and greek language, has been engulfed in the greek history. One of the most emblematic symbols of the empire were the churches and monasteries built by thousands in all the extend of the empire but mainly in Greece and remaining, through the ages, glittering ornaments as much of faith as of architecture, not to mention the load of mosaics and frescoes they are enriched with. All Greek islands are full of such churches and monasteries dating from the Early Christian period standing defiant to time and Ottoman agression.Thessaloniki is also a city expressing Byzantine tradition in its highest glamour.

In the photo is one of the oldest byzantine churches , in the region of Epirus, dedicated to Virgin Mother, built around 660 AC by emperor Constantine Pogonatos. The interior is covered with mosaics and frescoes. The north west side is shown.
