Istanbul(Constantinople)

Middle Ages in the West was a period of intellectual decadence, uninterrupted ignorance, superstition, political instability, social oppression and religious austerity under the strict Catholic authority of Holy Inquisition till the eve of rainessance tore off the thicness of darkness signalling the enlightenment in culture, arts and discoveries.
Middle Ages in the East was exactly the opposite, with the Byzantine Empire thriving for more than thousand years and offering a brilliant continuity to greek language culture and arts and with a Church propagating the christian orthodox dogma in a more moderate and aproved way than the Holy Inquisition in the west.Political agressio and atrocities, though, were equal to those in the west especially in emperor succession.
The legendary Constantinople, the capital, has stood for thousand years the leading spiritual, cultural and political stronghold of this eastern medieval empire enjoying admirable prosperity and glory. Situated in a unique and charismatic location quickly became the crossroads between East and West and the permanent goal for invasion and posession for all great conquerors till eventually,at the time of her decline, the luckiest of those, the Ottoman Mehmet ii entered the city in May 29 1453.
The end of 15th century brought Rainessance to the West and grievance to the East.....

In the photo a view of Galata, a rich and thriving Genovese section of the city during the latest period of the Byzantine Empire.
