1944 - Bastogne is encirceled by the XXXXVII. Panzerkorps. Under the flag of truce come four German emissaries including Leutnant Hellmuth Henke of Panzer-Lehrdivision and 2 enlistened man demanding the surrender of the US forces in Bastogne - blindfolded they were brought to General McAuliffe. Hearing of this he laughed and said "Aw, nuts" After receiving this message the German emissary saluted very stiffly and said: "We will kill many Americans. This is war". ColonelHarper answered: "On your way bud and good luck for you". The 4 Germans walked on down the road. Harper returned to the house regretting that his tongue has slipped and that he wished them good luck." The German Army never conquered Bastogne - it was finally relieved by General Patton.
