Basking in the Alaska Sun

Cruising through the pristine glacier and iceberg waterscapes of Alaska’s Glacier Bay on a photo-perfect
late May afternoon, I noticed the distant rocky shoreline of Marble Island was appearing a bit “squiggly.”

Closer examination through a long telephoto lens revealed the movement to be a large colony of Steller Sea Lions basking in the Alaska sunshine.

The photograph was made on Kodachrome-200 slide film in my Canon EOS-1 through an Image-Stabilized
75-300 mm lens with 2X tele-extender for an effective focal length of about 600 mm. A polarizing filter was also used.

This image is available in archival gallery prints and as a custom printed Photo Note Card.

a familiar looking place, sailed to Glacier Bay in 2006 - no sea lions then, but sea otters and bears .... a fine capture of this huge group, so close and sharp !!!
    greetings, Adele

relaxation is… collective barnacling* in the sun!

    ; )

must have been a great experience to be able to spot and observe them in the wild! love the sparse and cool northern colors of this image! greetings, sabine.

*derived from the word "barnacle" and not to be confused with a bygone internet fad called "planking"!** ; )
