Bahnhof Sljudjanka
In dem Ort Sljudjanka am Westzipfel des Baikalsees triift die alte Baikalbahn auf die heutige Strecke der Transsibirischen Eisenbahn.
Der Bahnhof wurde 1903 von italienischen Meistern aus weißem Marmor gebaut. So etwas findet man wohl auf der ganzen Wert nicht ein zweites Mal. Man hat damals diesen Baustoff nicht aus Verschwendungssucht gewählt, sondern im Gegenteil war es die kostengünstigste Variante, da der Marmorsteinbruch nur 10 km entfernt ist.

all these old bahnhof buildings are so dignified. they testify to the importance of making a rail journey in the old days when only significant business or family concerns made people undertake the exhausting and expensive journeys.i remember the old union station in chicago and i looked it up on the internet....now a place for great public function as well as ceremonies for the rich. it is also still used as a railroad station...the great hall being 5 stories high...it is like a cathedral!!! awesome!!!
they are so romantic these old stations...life was so different when they were built!
these are wonderful photos that capture the romance and drama of rail travel. a real treat heiko!
