Altan Ovoo behind Dariganga town
The (Golden) Altan Ovoo is a wide former crater topped by a new stupa, which only men are allowed to visit. The stupa was built in 1990 on top of the ruins of the original Bat Tsagaan stupa, which was built in 1820 and destroyed in 1937. In the area around Altan Ovoo, there are dozens of broken balbal – their exact origins are not clear.
The Ovoo is located high on the pinnacle of a mountain top over 2,000 meters high. In ancient ritual the women may form a ring around the base of the mountain, but only the men can climb high to the ovoo's summit and carry out the ritual offerings.

danke Anna und Martin, die Mongolei hat aber sehr viele unterschiedliche Gesichter in verschiedenen Landschaften und ist riesig groß. Gesamtdeutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz passen flächenmäßig dreimal in die Mongolei mit seinen gerade 3,17 Mill. Einwohnern. Die Landschaftsformen reichen vom Hochgebirge, dem Altai-Gebirge, über die Edelweißwiesen am Onon und Kherlen Fluss bis zur Wüste Gobi. Die Mongolei könnte man viele Jahre bereisen, und man wäre immer wieder in einer anderen landschaftlichen Gegend. Liebe Grüße WolfgangAnna und Martin 14/03/2013 12:52
