Ford's Hospital

English countryside is a most precious ark of history and tradition and searching for them may bring you face to face to really outstanding surprises. One of those certainly is old Ford's Hospital that I came across with in one of my wanderings in the Coventry countryside. Ford's Hospital is located in Greyfriars Lane and was found in...1509 by the rich merchant William Ford to be used as almshouse and provide accommodation and comfort for six elderly people, five men and one woman. It is excellently preserved according to its primary architectural structure despite damages suffered by a German bomb in the last war that killed the warden, a nurse and six residents. The restoration was done with original timber and is considered by historians as a fine example of english domestic architecture. Following Ford's death the residence was extended in 1529 in order to accommodate more persons and at the beginning of the Victorian era could serve up to 40 elderly women each receiving an allowance of three shillings and six pence a week. In recent years the building was used as location for filming episodes of Dr Who.

(Photography was done with film Ilford FP4 with the negatives converted to digital much later. A special permission was necessary to be obtained and kindly handed to me)
