i see most good photographers shoot with the trigger finger on top when they turn there cameras 90 degrees. is there a golden rule or is it what feels best? or is it a stability thing? could someone fill me in on this subject.

I suppose its just what feels best. There's no golden rule as far as i know.
Because of the angle that your wrist is put in, over the top offers more stability that below.
