Nur in der Hohen Tatra kommt diese seltene Unterart als Tatra-Gämse "Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica" vor. Man schätzt die Population auf max. 700 und ist besonders geschützt. Ihr in der freien Natur zu begegnen ist ein besonderes Erlebnis.
