Actually i used PSP 9.0 for a while and upgraded to X only recently. I am quite happy with it also because it allows for 16 bits now. I used Rawshooter too but have recently switched to Capture One Pro, which is just slightly better imo.
One word of caution for those considering the Canon 350D (Rebel XT digital) camera. Photoshop and Microsoft Digital Image state that they can open Nikon and Canon RAW files, BUT Canon changed the .CR2 file structure on the new 350D, and these programs can't directly open the files from this camera. I believe Photoshop has an update to fix that (?); Microsoft does not.
You can open the RAW files with the Canon software that comes with the camera (as Bob P. mentioned above), convert to .tif and export to your editing program.
I don't know about the other programs or other cameras mentioned in this thread, but the newest Canon .CR2 RAW files are definately different than previous ones.

i would normally use a simple and easy to learn image converter. just like these. it supports converting tiff to jpg or jpg to tiff. i think you will like it. unforutnately it is not free? anyone get better software for us?
