The Living Forest (310) : Lesser Periwinkle
Small is beautiful !
Lesser Periwinkle is a small dwarf plant native to Europe that likes to grow in the brushwood and dense undergrowth of deciduous forests.
Its tiny violet-purple flowers are produced mainly from early spring to mid summer.
In Belgium it’s a rather rare appearance, but I found one !
There exist also several cultivars of this species for use in gardens as a groundcover for its evergreen foliage, ease of culture and dense compactness that smothers most ‘weeds’.
Dutch name : Kleine Maagdenpalm
German name : Kleines Immergrün (auch Kleines Singrün genannt)
Latin name : Vinca minor

just read up on the "kleines immergrün", and wikipedia tells me that since in europe it was solely spread by people, its occurrence in the forest can still tell us till, where a medieval settlement or castle once was at, or where the romans passed through… very interesting! and, as always, a beautiful shot of the violet flower! it makes the lesser periwinkle shine big! ; ) greetings, sabine.---------------------------------------------------------------------
