The island's emblem is of course the famous monastery-castle, basilica of St John the Evangelist.its final form originating at the time of Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus around 1101, dominating at the highest site of the island. Its first and most ancient erection was recorded around 300-350 at the location where the monastery presently stands. Between 7th to 9th centuries the monastery hardly survived Muslim raids and the basilica many times was destoyed till the Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus built it in its original present form around 1101 raising also a high wall fortification around it for protection and rendering it a strong castle rather than a church.
The monastery is constantly visited by turists and many Christian pilgrims due to the islands connection with St John and the writting of the book of Apocalypse in his cave still present and respected by Christians.
