Lest We Forget - Nov 11th, 2023

This is the Douaumont Ossuary, a memorial containing the skeletal remains of 130. 000 French and German unidenified soldiers who died on the battlefield during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. It is located in Douaumont-Vaux, France, within the Verdun battlefield, and immediately next to the Fleury-devant-Douaumont National Necropolis. (taken in 2005)

Remembrance Day
More than 100 years after Armistice Day, the end of the 1st World War where 61 000 Canadian soldiers died .. and still the wars go on ... and soldiers and civilians die .... and veterans return physically or mentally injured ....

The first chapter of In Flanders Fields and Other Poems (a 1919 collection of poems by John McCrae) gives the text of the poem as follows:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

    It's horrible! My grandfather has been as a fighting soldier in Verdun. After that he knocked his chief, a field marshal, out. He never worked his bad experiences off.

    I have already visited this place. Show the futility of war very well.
    What has the war changed? Suffering for the victims' families and money in the coffers of the military industry

    It's mournfully. Oh yeah, I have a chance with my own eyes to see how graves are growing all over my country. We are settling of them our forests. And no one don't know where or when will my grave grows and the chances are many.

    Too many graves, regardless of nationality. And once again we have war in Europe and the Middle East. Mankind simply learns nothing from these tragedies!

    J'ai visité ce cimetière et le fort de Douaumont il y a quelques années, mon compagnon était encore présent à l'époque, il est décédé à présent. Je reconnais le monument et les nombreuses croix blanches très bien captées dans ta perspective, Adele...Cela me rappelle mon grand-père , il avait fait la Grande Guerre, la bataille de Verdun, avait été prisonnier des Allemands et envoyé dans les MInes de Sel pour y travailler, puis avait été libéré à la fin de la guerre. Il était revenu complètement différent, transformé avec cette douloureuse expérience...
    Merci aux Canadiens d'avoir oeuvré à nos côtés pour libérer la France, Merci encore!
    Nos avons pu vivre grâce à leur sacrifice et à celui de nos soldats!
    Bises et grand bravo pour ta photo de cette page d' Histoire Commune...

    J'ai visité le fort sans avoir vu ce cimetière ! que de jeunes gens morts pour notre liberté . ça fait réfléchir à toutes ces vies brisées . Bisse
