Lest We Forget - Nov. 11th 2008

War memorial in Canberra/Australia - last year at this time.
I find it so bizarre that Canada, the USA and Australia should remember their dead from the wars on Nov. 11th while Germany starts its Karneval season.

This is your strongest one in this series - from my point of view. Yes, we shouldn't forget but at the same time convict those who now fight and kill for silly reasons. Best regards Berthold

The tradition of starting the carneval season on November 11 at 11:11 originated in the 19th century.
November 11, 1918 (armistice of the first world war) was selected after 1918 as the base for the memorial day for the dead of the first world war.
So I don't believe the Germans are just ignoring that other people (rightly) mourn while the Germans are partying.

Das ist ja ein aufrüttelndes Motiv - viele haben für einen der Gefallenen eine Blüte hinterlassen... Durch den gewählten Bildschnitt bekommt die Aufnahme eine feine Tiefe und mankann sich gut vorstellen, wie lange diese Tafeln sind..

Ja, heute ist der 11.11. - ich habe die Eröffnmungssendung aus Köln angesehen - viele Karnevalslieder - richtige Ohrwürmer wurden gespielt...

Impressive and sad.
I wonder, however, who "was first" to select November 11th (??) Maybe the German carneval tradition is so much older and has had Nov 11th for centuries as the starting date for carneval(?). Frankly, I don't know.
