Das etwa 30 km2 große Gebiet umfasst eine Vielzahl von (85) Fumarolen und Solfataren, (62) heißen Quellen, (40) Geysiren, (5) Schlammvulkanen und weitläufige Sinterterrassen, gespeist durch den aktiven Vulkan „El Tatio“ (5208 m). Das Wasser erreicht mit Temperaturen von 78-85°C den Siedepunkt dieser Höhen (etwa 86,3°C). Kühlt das Wassers beim Austreten ab, kommt es zur Ausfällung von amorphen SiO2(Silica)und Kalk aus übersättigter Lösung. An zahlreichen Geysiren und Thermalquellen haben sich deshalb Terrassen oder Schlote aus Geyserit, ein Spritzwassergestein aus Chalcedon (mikrokristallinem SiO2mit wenig Wasser), Opal (amorphem wasserhaltigen SiO2 und Kalk gebildet.
