Greece Tzoumerca mountains The old monastery of Kipina
In the remote and mountainous region of Epirus(Western Greece), on the Tzoumerca mountains, is the monastery of Panaghia(Virgin) Kipina. The monastery,a miracle of architectural craft, was build by the Byzantine emperors in 1210 and it is not only perched but entirely engraved in the rock at an unbeleivable height. Till the 40ties the only way to reach the monastery was to be lifted up in a big basket pulled up by means of a primitive and hand propelled krane that is now kept as a memory item in the monastery museum. Now the church is connected with land with a ramp. The monastery extends significantly in the rock and has many rooms, a small church and a cave.

living in a slit… this is just absolutely amazing – both the place and the picture of it! so great – composition-wise – with the road down below making us feel the dimensions! i guess, only the most strong-willed believers would go through the strain of constructing and building a settlement like that! it's literally "inserted" into the rock like a thre-dimensional puzzle piece. what amazing architects the people must have been. living inside the rock, being protected by it and – quite literally! – being at one with it… for me it's an almost pantheistic thought… speaking of thoughts: the thought about the basket trip gives me vertigo! ; ) greetings, sabine. p.s.: beautiful use of light, too!

this is such an awe inspiring place ... with the view onto the street way down below one can really appreciate the height of the rock .... what feats of craftsmanship these people mastered !!!

The preview lacks...the photograph, and the need to scroll, gave this fine work character. Bravo artist.
