Istanbul, although frequently threatened by terrorist attacks mostly due to its multiracial character, is a true wonder to visit and no one should ever miss the chance! A city of imperial glamour and glory through the centuries not only as capital(Constantinople) of Byzantine empire but also in its continuity as capital of the past Ottoman empire, remained as that till 1923 when Kemal Ataturk decided to move the capital to Ancara for safety and give birth to the "westernized" and more radical and democratic Turkie deposing the sultans. This had a lot of positive sides but, unfortunately, also a lot of negative side effects with the country still suffering political instability and the city serious terrorist attacks and racial conflicts.
In the photo a view of majestic Marmara sea.

On a side note - A compelling novel about that history is Louis de Bernières' "Birds without Wings". I guess you know it...
