These instruments are Ukuleles and are descendants of Braguinha of Madeira Island and they were arrived in Hawaii with Madeira people..
The braguinha, in turn, is a descendant of the continental Cavaquinho.
However I share the view that despite having 4-string ukulele its origin must be in Rajão Madeira which has 5 strings but tuned more like. It is an interesting controversy.
