Pompei
Via dell'abbondanza, the main ancient street in Pompei lesding directly to the Forum. Both sides of the street were covered with shops.
Perfectly preserved, Via Dell'abbondanza extends gloriously in front of the eyes of this lonely visitor reminiscent of an era flooding with noisy crowds sniffing in the many shops in each side and enjoying the luxury and the plentiful allowances of a thriving city till the lethal moment of August 24th 79 AD that Vesuvius errupting discharged its boiling lava burrying everything underneath.
Presently, in the photo, Vesuvio can be seen rising silent and benevolent at the far distance contributing amply to the turistic profit of the ancient site as if trying to compensate for the disastrous outcome of its past eruption....

It is difficult to believe that this place was once thriving and filled with people going about their everyday business.... and then it was gone. burried under tons of hot ash, seemingly lost for ever. But it was dug out... uncovered and now we can see it all and try to understand........A superb view along the main street.
