I plan on doing some domestic and international travel this year and want to bring along my tripod. I have an expensive Gitzo tripod and what to keep it secure. In the old days I would carry it on the plane with me but I am certain that is not permitted today. How do you travel and fly with your tripod?

I think nowadays it is only possible to take a tripod if this is packed in your checked luggage.
On board carriage in generally is not allowed anymore due to security measures.

Depends which company you are flying with. So far, the only one that tried to charge me for the tripod was RyanAir... SouthWest is great in the US, no charge for bags, 2 max, and no problem for the tripod, US airways also are tripod friendly by my experience.
