The Noble Brands.....

In my country,Sweden,I have experienced this opinion that cameras from Canon or Nikon is the only brands that a serios photographer will use.
Of course,I know that C/N build very good equipment, but the way I see it,other brands are not so bad, that just these two brands are the only cameras that is ok.
I,m using a Sony A330 myself, and I'm very satisfied with it,and I can't see any reason to side step Pentax,Olympus,Panasonic or other brands either.
So I just wonder,is this strange opinion common also in Your countries?
Should be fun to know.
And by the way- maybe the best camera is the one that you carry with you.
Best Regards / Bo Karlsson

Sorry for being a little bit unclear,Laki K.What I did mean was that this opinion that I was talking about,is a thing you notice among amateur-photographers.Not among proffesionals.
I know the Leica very well, there was an legendary swedish photographer,Christer Strömholm, always using Leica cameras.
What I meant was to take up is this opinion among amateurs, that Nikon and Canon are the only brand worth using.
I certainly have this feeling that this opinion is strong in Sweden, and the question was if it's the same in other places.

It is not a Swedish phenomenon, it is not so different in other countries.
Finally it is just the result of excellent marketing and maybe good timing - C&N were in time with payable consumer DSLR to get their shares on the market.
And the market forgets so quick: Sony was formerly Minolta - Minolta and Pentax dominated the consumer SLR market for decades. The Olympus OM series was a benchmark, the OM4ti was known as one of the best machines ever.

Well ofcourse there ar other brands as wll, even though i think there's not so many anymore.
Talking about SLR's in this case.
Olympus, recently stopped making slr's completely, thereby leaving all their users standing in the cold.
Pentax, not to be taken serious anymore nowadays, after being very late before their first Dslr became available, they are now badly lagging behind, Always difficult to get lenses, (there's far less then N & C ) and other supplies.
Sony, not a bad camera at all, only, there is not as many acessories available as N & C on top of that, anyone wanting to get involved with strobist photography will find that the Sony flash shoe is quite a drag, allways need to get all kinds of solutions to be able to use strobist or studio flash equip.
So that leaves only 2 brands that really have a full system avalable, and those are Nikon and Canon.

Interesting facts you have.I didn't know that Olympus has stopped making slr's.First time I hear about it.
The company that I work for sold an Olympus slr,for about 4 month's ago.Not so good for the customers.
Pentax seem to be on their way,but maybe it's so,that it's tricky to find lenses and other equipment for them.
And according to my own Sony,You have a point there,I was quite crossed because it was so hard to find a suitible flash unit for it,because of the flash shoe.
Thanks for Your answers to this thread,I understand this phenonenom about C&N better now.
Best regards to You all. Bo Karlsson.

Ruud,
do you have further info about Oly stopping DSLR? I only know rumors about stopping low-end DSLR as f.e. the e-400-series and focusing on the PEN-series. But the semi-prof models as e-5 should be continued....
I see the point of a huge range of lenses and spares for C&N but how much "serious amateurs" really use it? Looking at the German forum of the FC, it seems 80% of all C&N user choose from just 10 standard lenses....

As far as Olympus is concerned, yes, the only Dslr they still make is the E5, all others have been discontinued.
At the same time, with only 1 type still being produced, i think it will not take long before also that type will be stopped.
Without a good amateur market, there's hardly a way to maintain the Pro market modell i think.
As far as the market for Dslr's and other equip, I am surprised every single day again about the amounts of money being spent by amateurs on pro bodies and other equip.

ok, now its more clear. well, as the others said one point may be the huge accessory and lens program the c/n is offering, also maybe having some kind of secure brand (looking back there are plenty of traditional camera companies which were sold or went out of business) might influence the buyers.
and for sure a big point is the marketing of the big ones.

The reason could be that Nikon and, to a lesser extent, Canon have the largest selection of lenses in their prtogramme.
Hello Bo,
of course there are pretty good brands on the camera-market outside of C/N. When I chose a new system 3 years ago I just had made some bad experiences. I owned a Contax RX with several zeiss-lenses. It works great, but zeiss sold its camera production to kyocera and they stopped after some years the slr production. So I could not step into the digital age with my equipment. The risk of such a development exists in my opinion rather to small manufacturers (see the current trouble with oly). Especally
for amateurs is the capital spending to dslr-equipment not a bagatelle. For this reason I chose one of the big 2 (in my case nikon). Nevertheless sony, pentax etc. make great cameras. In the eyes of amateurs the purpose of investion protection may be a subliminal reason for the bad rating of the smaller brands.

I live in the Dominican Republic, and I have two Sony and two Nikon bodies.
Nikon is popular with some pros here, just as Canon, but a lot of people think very good about Sony here.
In Europe people treat you like a fool if you own a Sony.
In the German channel there are some photographers, Canon and Nikon users, of course, who offend Sony A55 and A77 users, writing rubbish like this:
- That Sony's electronic viewfinders are the worst on the market.
- That Sony DSLRs are not reliable, and people buy them just because Sony's marketing strategy is so clever.
- That direct sunshine deforms the plastic bodies of Sony DSLRs because of the bad quality.

Dont despair Jürgen. As they say, "There are idiots allover".
I think if you wanna go really professional you need to go for Phase One or Hasselblad ;-)
