Which lens to buy for macro photography

Hi All,

I am using Nikon D90 with 18-105 VR lens. Now, I am planning to buy a 70-300 lens with D90 but since am very much confused between brands and models. Hence, I need advices/suggestions from all the experts.

Which brand: Nikkor / Sigma / Tamron?

Which 70-300 model from the above brands?

Also, do you recommend AF-S or AF model?

My preference will be Quality and then Price. My goal is to use it for clicking birds, insects, etc.

Please suggest. Thank you all in advance for taking out time to reply.

If you think about 70-300mm i would certainly go for the Nikkor, AF-s or AF, but as far as i know there is only 1 type Nikkor 70-300mm presently.

To my mind you can't do all "birds and insects" with the same lens.

I do some insects with a Nikon 55 mm macro lens or with a Tamron 90 mm macro lens, sometimes fitted with an additional 10 dioptre lens.

I'm a bit confused with the heading as you seek a lens for macro photography yet mention wanting to purchase a tele(zoom) 70-300 lens.

For genuine 1:1 macro photography, I would recommend the Nikkor AF-S 105 f/2.8G lens.

If it is indeed the 70-300 zoom range you are after then the Nikkor AF-S 70-300VR enjoys a good reputation though I would also not disregard the newer Tamron 70-300VC USD lens. Vibration control and quality at max 300mm local range are possibly better than the Nikkor.

Some folks have produced nice close-up shots with the Nikkor AF-S 70-200VR lens with a Canon 500D filter attached.

I've heard great things about Tamrons macro objectives. Im going to order the 60 mm f 2.0 tamron micro today

Except for the extra focal length with the tamron 90 mm, I've heard the 60 mm has better IQ.

Macro photography (or photomacrography or macrography, and sometimes macrophotography) is extreme close-up photography, usually of very small subjects
