Winter meeting of wigeons
The Eurasian wigeon is a medium-sized duck that breeds in open wetlands in the northernmost areas of Europe and Asia (Scandinavia, Russia, Siberia, up to the Barents Sea).
It’s a strongly migratory bird that migrates in winter to western and southern Europe (and sometimes even to Africa).
Whole colonies of wigeons overwinter annually in Belgium as you can see in my picture.
Dutch name : Smient
German name : Pfeifente
Latin name : Anas penelope (previously Mareca penelope)
Location : Uitkerkse polder at Blankenberge (Belgium)
