Design or Safety? – Making Burrard Bridge more attractive for all people

Burrard Bridge is listed as the number one ‘endangered’ site on the latest 2003 Heritage Vancouver list. The proposed attachment of bicycle or pedestrian lanes is criticised by the Heritage Vancouver Society for fear that it would destroy the ‘sleek design’ of the 1932 bridge. Burrard Bridge is indeed a beautiful piece of architecture and an important traffic corridor over False Creek. Still, the planned extension is not solely about improving traffic throughput, but also about safety and freedom for cyclists and pedestrians, who at the moment are forced together on a relatively narrow sidewalk. Even though the sidewalk may appear wide enough, a considerable part of the space on the sidewalk is wasted, because cyclists are afraid of the big dropoff and being to close to the oncoming, moving traffic. It’s about time something is done about this situation.
The Heritage Vancouver Society wants to ‘revitalize neighbourhoods using heritage’. But wouldn’t that include making public space more accessible and attractive for pedestrians and cyclists so they can fully appreciate the heritage sites? One has to remember, that for every pedestrian and cyclist there is one less car on our streets. And good non-car infrastructure makes for liveable neighbourhoods. It is important, and many would agree, that this ‘green’ infrastructure needs to be improved further. How many heritage sites have been sacrificed in the past for new or improved routes for motorized traffic?
Please, Heritage Vancouver, don’t sacrifice safety and the general improvement of our neighbourhoods for the aesthetics of the bridge. Pedestrians and cyclists would be most appreciative.

Hallo Rico,
ich glaube das Rätsel gelöst zu haben: es sind die Lampen auf der Brücke, deren Lichtkegel durch die Brückenkante abgeschnitten wird.

@ Michaela, Hannes kann auch sein das es vonm Schiff her kommt, also verwackelt ist...
@H.-P. Ich hab auch schon überlegt, aber es macht irgendwie keinen rechten Sinn, fahr da sonst immer nur drüber, nicht drunter durch, aber ich schau mal...

Eigentlich ein schönes Foto auch bei nicht so guter Schärfe. Was mich etwas irritiert ist die für mich nicht erklärbare hintere Kante der Spiegelung der Lichter (welcher Lichter?) im Wasser.

Die Beleuchtung ist schon einmalig. Leider ist die Schärfe wirklich nicht so gut. Vielleicht kriegen wir mal einen guten Abzug vom Dia zu sehen?
