The Living Forest (349) : Hazel catkins
Today, 21th of december, the start of the astrological winter and the shortest day of the year.
It should be snowing, it should be freezing, it should be bloody cold, but it’s 14°C in Belgium and look what I found : catkins in full bloom on a common hazel !!!
Normally, this deciduous tree is the first one to awake from hibernation, mostly mid winter.
Seasons have gone mad. Help !!
Dutch name : Hazelaar
German name : Gemeine Hasel
Latin name : Corylus avellana

Die Natur ist ein bisschen durcheinander... mir wäre knackig kalt und Schnee lieber. Der Gemeine Hasel kurbelt bei mir schon mal die Allergie an... ich bin schon voll drin!Eine klasse Aufnahme!!

14°C - das ist natürlich viel zu warm. Da kommt die Natur durcheinander. Gegen milde Winter mit Temperaturen um die 5°C habe ich aber nichts...Schönes Foto!

oh indeed, strange and a bit scary to see the hazelnut trees sporting a full crown of catkins (in my garden and three more trees down the lane) .... it is, however, beautiful too and gives hope for a mild Winter !!!season's greetings,
