The Living Forest (199) : Indian Strawberry

A spontaneous natural growth of Indian Strawberries (also called Mock Strawberries) in the forest is getting more and more extreme rare nowadays, but I found a few and they were even growing in the darkest place of the forest.

Evidence from archeological excavations suggests that wild strawberries have been consumed by humans since the Stone Age.
They were even widely cultivated in Europe until the 18th century, when they began to be replaced by Garden Strawberries (Fragaria ananassa) with their much larger fruit better suited for breeding.

This wild strawberry might look big on the photo, but in reality it is only about 0,5cm across.

Dutch name : Schijnaardbei
German name : Indische Scheinerdbeere
Latin name : Potentilla indica (formerly Duchesnea indica)
