On this late May afternoon, the flag is being lowered at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry. Many more hours remain to
enjoy in the low humidity sunshine of this photo-encouraging day along Baltimore’s expansive harbor, but other venues
will need to be sought out, as the lowering of the flag marks the end of visiting hours at this historical landmark.

The flag has the thirteen stars representing the original states at the time American Francis Scott Key (*) stood on the deck of a British battleship during the War of 1812 and wrote “The Star Spangled Banner,” inspired by the fact that after a night of heavy bombardment, “our flag was still there.”
