Une légende raconte que le rouge-gorge chercha un arbre pour s’abriter du froid pour l’hiver.Tous les arbres lui refusèrent l’hospitalité sauf le houx. Le rouge-gorge se blessa avec ses feuilles piquantes, colorant ainsi son plumage en rouge.
Depuis lors, comme par punition tous les arbres perdent leurs feuilles en hiver sauf le houx qui avait accepté de donner un abri au rouge-gorge.
En souvenir de cette histoire, le houx portent toujours des baies rouges..
